Chefs Charlie and Marion Cascio

Charlie Cascio, internationally-renown chef, restaurateur, natural foods consultant and lecturer, has taught and worked throughout the United States and Europe for the past 34 years. His award-winning cuisine has garnered rave reviews in both the US and Europe . Recently retired as the head chef for The Esalen Institute, Charlie has been devoting his time to writing a cookbook commissioned by Esalen and appears frequently as guest chef for both Wilbur Hot Springs and Esalen.

Marion Cascio was born into a family of chefs and began her involvement with fine restaurants in early childhood. Her 5 year study of the culinary arts at a prestigious cooking school in Germany led to her work in many highly regarded restaurants and spas where her superb talents have been well received. Marion is known especially for her sumptuous desserts that push the sated diner over a blissful edge. For the past 5 years, Marion has been a staff chef at the Esalen Institute.

Charlie and Marion live completely self-sufficiently on land in Big Sur where they keep goats, bees, chickens, and an abundant organic garden. The love and joy they have for their art is immediately apparent in their fabulous fare. During their weekend at Wilbur, they will marry healthy, organic cuisine with exceptional taste.

2008 Writing Workshops with Clive Matson

October 23,25,26 "Writing and Powerful Experience"

Do you ever wonder how Sylvia Plath or Dylan Thomas did such remarkable writing?  They were so close to their creativity they may simply have recorded the images rising through their minds.  In these workshops we call that creative source the "Crazy Child", and we avoid the usual editorial judgments.  We let that Child write!  No matter if it is stories, poems, a play, songs or an ecstatic essay, the Child's words will likely contain our most vivid writing.  And when we share our writing, the workshop will inform us more quickly than we could discover on our own exactly what that memorable writing is.  The Crazy Child writes, and we learn from the words.  Technically, this kind of writing is proprioceptive dealing with the stories contained in our nervous systems; it is unpredictable and imparts texture, flair and power to language.  For beginners, for intermediate writers and for professionals who want to expand their horizons

Clive Matson, author of Let the Crazy Child Write! (New World Library, 1998) is a poet, story writer, essayist, and playwright who has led more than 3000 workshops nationwide.

His new book is Chalcedony's First Ten Songs"Extravagant, rich and powerful - these poems are a vibrant call to body and spirit and earth through the sensory world. It's as if Clive Matson's early voice lost its anger and returns to embrace sensual life in all its joys and pains."

Discussion of the topic begins at 8pm the first evening, main workshop at 11am the next day, participants' reading at 8p.m that evening and a closing session at 10am the final day.  Our writing takes place in large chunks of time woven between relaxing in the mineral springs, walks and massages.

Average contribution for the workshop is $150

For room reservations, rates and to register, call (530) 473-2306 or for more information, email Clive at clivematsonpoet.com or (510) 654-6495
